 | Custodian 2 Ref: CUS2
If you are collecting lots of information about people with the same surname who are not necessarily linked then Custodian 2 will help you sort them out and keep track of them. You may key or import the data via data entry forms and the program will look for possible links between the people you have entered. Custodian 2 is an excellent database for anyone involved in a One-Name study as the software allows you to allocate references to individuals and families.
This version has over 80 forms for records such as parish records, civil registration, census returns and most others you will ever need. Although Custodian 2 does not have as many forms as Custodian 3, and not as much functionality or flexibility it offers good value and may be upgraded at a later date. The manual is supplied on the CD and is not supplied as a printed manual in this version. This version will run on Windows 95 or any later version of Windows.
What's in Custodian?
Custodian is not a family tree program, but a series of databases with pre-defined forms, specially designed to store genealogical information. Custodian consists of a series of data-entry forms in which you can enter your information from lots of different sources (UK based). All the principal names from these forms are automatically included in a Master Index which you can browse, search and then access any record from. Import and Export of CSV files and Import of GEDCOM files is supported.
Introduction Custodian 2 has over 80 data entry forms for all sorts of records, such as parish records, civil registration, census returns, wills, deeds, military and school, to name but a few. Each data entry form is customisable - most have all the fields you need to get started but you can add fields of your own. Every person in a record can be indexed and every person can have a Personal and Family Reference, which is used to assign him/her to a family group. So even though many of the people in your records have no proven link, those that do can be identified, and as your research progresses and more links are found, so you can update your information in Custodian 2.
All names from the records you enter can be indexed in a Master Index. The Master Index also includes key fields from the source records. The names from the forename and surname fields are automatically included in the Index - other names, from text fields for example, can be included if you wish. So for example a copy of a will may contain the names and residences of beneficiaries, witnesses, guardians, executors, as well as the testator. You decide which of these people you want included in the Master Index.
The facilities in Custodian 2 allow you flexibility in handling your data - for example, you may want to sort your parish register entries by parish and date, but you may want to sort your births, marriages and deaths indexes by Registration District and year and quarter. Each data entry form can be sorted by any, or all, of the fields. You can also filter out certain records - for example, you might want to find out what entries in the IGI form you have for a particular name and a particular year of christening. You can do this in Custodian 2 and then print or export the results if you wish. The limit for the number of records which can be stored in Custodian is in excess of 2 billion!!
